DRAGON BOAT AT THE BEACH

By celebrating each victory, we “awake the dragon within”.
What is Dragon Boat at the Beach
Founded in 2007, Dragon Boat at the Beach is a cancer survivor-centered team in the Horry and Georgetown area that unites survivors, supporters, and community members. Guided by teammates who have pursued specialized training in steering, drumming, safety, and coaching ( as well as competing nationally and internationally ) our team offers a safe, supportive, and dynamic environment for both new and seasoned paddlers.
Who Can Participate

Almost everyone! We are a health and wellness program that welcomes men and women who wish to participate. We especially encourage individuals with any type of cancer to join us, but family members, friends, and community supporters are warmly invited as well. Whether you’re a survivor, a supporter, or simply interested in a positive, active lifestyle, dragon boating can bring lasting health benefits and a strong sense of camaraderie.

How Often Are The Practices Held

Weather-permitting, paddling practices are held several times a week on local inland waterways.  The team practices for wellness and/or competitive racing events.  Paddlers tone muscles and build strength, balance, and endurance through regular conditioning classes.

What Are The Benefits
Through the shared experience of paddling and related social events, Dragon Boat at the Beach constitutes an active form of support, emphasizing a positive life after cancer.

The use of Dragon Boats for racing are believed by scholars, sinologists, and anthropologists to have originated in southern central China more than 2500 years ago,

History of Dragon Boating
Dragon Boating is an ancient Chinese sport which involves a crew of 20 paddlers, a steersman, and a coxswain racing a distance of up to 500 meters in a 4 ft wide x 40 ft long boat. Internationally, it is one of the fastest growing water sports.

The appeal to dragon boating is mainly contributed to the sport’s ability to accommodate a wide spectrum of skill levels ranging from novice to competitive. At the novice and recreational level, teams often form as a means of social outlet, team building and an alternative means of exercise
